Polyvagal Theory: A Science of Safety

At its foundation is neuroception, which Porges defines as a neural process, distinct from perception, capable of distinguishing environmental and visceral features that are safe, dangerous or life-threatening. The evaluation of risk and safety triggers shifts in autonomic state without requiring conscious awareness.
Porges argues that feelings of safety have a measurable neurophysiological substrate, which would move the study of safety from a subjective to an objective science. In his account, three autonomic states map to three modes of functioning: ventral vagal (safety, social engagement, restoration), sympathetic (mobilisation, vigilance), and dorsal vagal (shutdown, immobilisation). One caveat we want stated up front, not buried: Polyvagal Theory is an influential framework and a contested one. A group of physiologists published a detailed rebuttal of it in 2026 (see the next study), so treat what follows as Porges’ model rather than settled physiology.
