Good Places to Live and Sleep Well: A Literature Review about the Role of Architecture in Determining Non-Visual Effects of Light

Their starting point is that the characteristics of lighting affecting circadian rhythms are spectrum, light levels, spatial pattern and temporal pattern (duration of exposure, timing, and previous exposure history), and that because people now spend most of their time indoors, the light dose they receive depends on the building itself: its location and orientation, window dimensions, external obstructions, the geometry of the room, and the optical properties of walls and furniture.
The review also identifies early to mid-morning, roughly 06:00 to 10:00, as the period in which sufficient illuminance can phase advance the clock. Their conclusion is a careful one, and we will not overstate it: despite considerable research, numerous open questions remain, mostly because there is no shared, clear method for evaluating the effects of lighting on circadian rhythm regulation. In other words, building orientation demonstrably shapes your light dose. Exactly how much any one compass bearing is worth has not been settled.

Eight Mansions, each Trigram number prescribes specific auspicious sleep directions
Ba Zhai (Eight Mansions) assigns each person a Trigram number based on birth year and gender. The Trigram determines four auspicious and four inauspicious directions. Sheng Qi (生氣), the most auspicious, is prescribed as the ideal sleeping orientation, with the crown of the head pointing that way. East-group Trigram numbers (1, 3, 4, 9) have Sheng Qi in eastern quadrant directions.

The daylight literature supports a narrow, useful claim: building orientation determines your indoor light dose, and morning light in the 06:00 to 10:00 window is when light can phase advance the clock. An east-facing bedroom is well placed to deliver that. East-group Trigram numbers happen to point to the same quadrant. We find that overlap genuinely interesting and we present it as an overlap, not as chronobiology validating Ba Zhai.
